The First Hour

The moment after impact is disorienting. Your ears might be ringing, your hands might be shaking, and your mind is probably racing through a dozen things at once. That’s normal. It’s also exactly why having a fixed order of operations matters right now — you don’t have to think clearly, you just have to follow the steps in order. Here’s what that order looks like.

Step One: Check for Injuries Before Anything Else

Before you touch a phone, before you check the damage to your car, before you even think about the other driver — stop and check yourself and your passengers. This isn’t about diagnosing anything. It’s about figuring out whether the very next thing you do should be different because someone is hurt.

Take a breath. Move your hands, your feet, your neck, slowly. Ask each passenger directly: “Are you hurt? Can you move?” Don’t assume silence means “fine” — someone in shock may not immediately recognize or report pain.

If anyone is unconscious, having trouble breathing, bleeding heavily, or reports numbness, severe pain, or an inability to move, do not attempt to move them yourself unless staying put puts them in immediate danger (like a fire risk or being in the path of traffic). Call 911 right away and let the dispatcher guide you. This is not the moment to assess or treat anything on your own — that’s what trained responders are for.

If everyone seems okay, that’s genuinely good news, but keep it in the back of your mind that some injuries — particularly ones involving the neck, back, or head — don’t announce themselves right away. That’s a conversation for a medical professional later, not something to sort out standing on the side of the road. For now, the only question is: does anyone need help getting out of this car immediately, or can we move to the next step?

Step Two: Move to Safety If You Can

If you and your passengers are able to move, and the vehicles are drivable, the next priority is getting out of the flow of traffic. A stopped car in a live lane — even a slow one, even in a parking lot — is a second collision waiting to happen. More people are hurt or killed by secondary crashes at the scene of a first one than most drivers realize.

If you can do so safely, move your vehicle to the shoulder, a nearby parking lot, or as far to the side as the road allows. “Safely” is the key word — if moving the car means driving on a shredded tire, a car that won’t steer straight, or through a cloud of steam or smoke, leave it where it is and get people out and away from the vehicle instead, standing well clear of traffic.

A few things worth knowing before you move anything:

• In most states, if the vehicles are driveable and no one is seriously injured, you’re expected to clear the roadway rather than leave cars sitting in a live lane — this is often referred to as a “move over” or “steer it, clear it” expectation, and it exists to prevent secondary crashes, not to rush your claim.
• If you have a phone, take a few quick photos of the vehicles’ positions before you move them, if it’s safe to do so in the few seconds it takes. This isn’t urgent — safety comes first — but it can be genuinely useful later.
• If a vehicle can’t be moved, or you’re not sure it’s safe to move it, leave it and get people to safety instead. A car is replaceable. Standing in a travel lane is not a risk worth taking to preserve the exact resting spot of a bumper.

Once everyone is out of the roadway and away from traffic — on a sidewalk, a shoulder, behind a guardrail, anywhere with distance from moving cars — you can move to the next step.

Step Three: Turn On Hazards and Call 911

As soon as you’re stopped, whether you moved the car or not, turn on your hazard lights. This takes two seconds and it’s one of the most important things you can do — it tells every other driver approaching the scene that something is wrong, well before they can see why.

If you have reflective triangles or flares in your trunk and it’s safe to place them, this is the moment. Set them behind the vehicles, at a distance, especially if visibility is poor or you’re on a highway. If you don’t have them, don’t worry about it — hazards and distance from the road are what matter most.

Now call 911. Do this even if the damage looks minor and everyone says they feel fine. There are a few reasons this call matters more than it might seem to in the moment:

• A responding officer can create an official record of the crash. That record becomes a reference point for everyone involved later, including insurance companies, and it removes a lot of the “he said, she said” that tends to creep into memory after a stressful event.
• If anyone’s condition changes — and adrenaline can mask pain for the first several minutes — emergency medical responders are already on the way rather than being called after the fact.
• Dispatchers can tell you whether police will respond in person or whether, for a minor crash with no injuries, you’ll be directed to file a report at a station or online instead. Rules on this vary by location, so let the dispatcher tell you what applies where you are rather than guessing.

When you call, stay calm and give the basics: your location as precisely as you can describe it, whether anyone is injured, and whether vehicles are blocking traffic. The dispatcher will ask follow-up questions — answer them plainly and let them direct the call. You don’t need to editorialize about who caused the crash. That’s not what this call is for, and it’s not information the dispatcher needs from you in order to send help.

What to Do While You Wait for Help

Once hazards are on and the call is made, there’s often a stretch of time — a few minutes, sometimes longer — before anyone arrives. This waiting period is where a lot of drivers either freeze up or start doing the wrong things out of nervous energy. Here’s how to spend it usefully instead.

Stay put and stay visible

Stand well away from traffic, but stay near enough to your vehicle that you’re there when help arrives. If it’s dark or visibility is poor, staying visible to approaching traffic matters as much as staying out of the road itself.

Check on the other people involved

If it’s safe to approach, check whether occupants of the other vehicle are okay. Keep this simple and human — “Is everyone alright over there?” is enough. This isn’t the moment to discuss what happened, apportion blame, or speculate about who did what. Adrenaline makes people say things they don’t mean, and those statements can create confusion later that has nothing to do with what actually occurred. Save the details for the officer and for your insurance company.

Document what you can, calmly

If you’re physically able and it’s safe, use your phone to take photos: the position of the vehicles, damage to each car, the road and surroundings, any relevant traffic signs or signals, and weather or lighting conditions. If there’s visible debris or skid marks, a photo of those can help too. There’s no need to rush this or make it exhaustive — a handful of clear photos taken calmly is more useful than a frantic pile of blurry ones.

Exchange basic information with the other driver if you haven’t already and it’s safe to do so: names, phone numbers, insurance company and policy number, license plate, and driver’s license number. Write it down or photograph the documents rather than relying on memory.

If there are witnesses nearby who saw what happened, ask if they’d be willing to give you their name and phone number. Not everyone will want to get involved, and that’s fine — you’re not obligated to convince anyone.

Avoid a few common missteps

• Don’t get into a discussion about fault with the other driver, even a friendly one. It’s natural to want to smooth things over verbally, but this isn’t the time or place, and it’s not necessary for anything that happens next.
• Don’t leave the scene before police have arrived or released you, even if the other driver suggests just “handling it between us.” Leaving early can create real complications later that have nothing to do with the crash itself.
• Don’t accept a cash offer on the spot to avoid involving insurance, even if it sounds convenient in the moment. Damage that looks minor at the scene can turn out to be more involved once a mechanic actually looks at it, and a documented process protects everyone better than a handshake does.

When help arrives

Let the paramedics do their job first if anyone needs attention. When you speak with the responding officer, stick to what you observed — what happened, where, and when — rather than guessing at things you didn’t see or assigning blame. The officer’s report will become part of the official record, and a plain, factual account from you is the most useful thing you can contribute to it.

Once the scene is cleared and everyone is safe, the next steps — notifying your insurance company, arranging repairs, and understanding what happens with your policy from here — can wait until you’re calm and somewhere stable. The first five minutes are about safety and information. Everything else has room to happen afterward, and it’s worth taking the time to do it right rather than rushing because the crash itself felt rushed.

Names and contact details

Start here, before anything else. Names and phone numbers are the easiest details to lose track of once people start driving away, and the hardest to recover later.

For every other driver involved, write down:

• Full legal name, as it appears on their license
• Phone number
• Home address
• Email address, if they’re willing to give it

Do the same for any passengers in any vehicle, and for pedestrians or cyclists involved. If there were witnesses who stopped, ask for their name and phone number too. A witness who leaves without giving contact information is gone for good — most people will not track you down later, even if they mean to.

If a passenger or witness seems reluctant to share details, it’s fine to simply ask, “Can I get your name and number in case the insurance companies need to follow up?” Framing it as a normal, expected step usually gets a straightforward answer.

Police and any responding officer

If law enforcement responds, get the officer’s name, badge number, and the agency they work for. Ask how to obtain a copy of the report once it’s filed, and note the report or case number if one is issued on the spot. This report becomes a reference point for your insurer later, so the officer’s information matters almost as much as the other driver’s.

Insurance and license information

This is the information your insurer will ask for first when you call in the claim, so getting it right at the scene saves a lot of back-and-forth later.

From every other driver, collect:

• Insurance company name
• Policy number, from their insurance card
• Driver’s license number and the state that issued it

The easiest way to get all of this accurately is to photograph both sides of their insurance card and both sides of their license, if they’re willing. A photo removes any chance of a transposed number or a misheard letter. If someone hesitates to hand over a license, it’s reasonable to just photograph the insurance card and confirm the name matches what’s on their ID.

Check that the name on the insurance card matches the name of the person driving. Sometimes a car is insured under a spouse, a parent, or an employer, and that’s normal — but note it, because it affects who your insurer will be corresponding with.

If the driver isn’t the vehicle owner

If the person driving the other car isn’t the registered owner — a rental, a borrowed car, a company vehicle — write down both the driver’s information and the owner’s information if it’s available. Rental agreements and vehicle registrations sometimes list this separately from the insurance card.

Your own information

While you’re gathering this from others, pull your own insurance card and license as well. It’s easy to assume you already know your policy number, but confirming it on the spot means you’re not searching for it later while trying to remember everything else.

Vehicle and license plate details

Vehicles get described inconsistently after the fact — “a dark SUV” isn’t much help a week later. Get the specifics down while the car is still in front of you.

For each vehicle involved, record:

• License plate number and the state on the plate
• Make, model, and year, if you can tell or the driver confirms it
• Color
• Any visible damage, and where it’s located on the vehicle

A plate number is often the single most useful piece of information you can walk away with, because it ties directly back to a specific insurance policy even if other details turn out to be wrong or incomplete. If you can photograph the plate clearly, do that in addition to writing it down.

Photos do a lot of the work for you

Take photos of each vehicle from multiple angles — front, back, both sides, and close-ups of the damage. Include a wide shot that shows the vehicles’ final positions relative to each other and to the road. If it’s readable, photograph the VIN, usually visible through the windshield on the driver’s side dashboard or on a sticker inside the driver’s door frame. None of this requires special skill. A phone camera capturing everything in view is more reliable than trying to describe it from memory later.

Scene details that matter later

Once the people and vehicles are documented, take a few more minutes for the scene itself. These details rarely feel important in the moment, but they’re often exactly what an insurer or adjuster asks about first.

Location

Note the exact location: street names, nearest cross street or intersection, mile marker if you’re on a highway, or a landmark if there’s no clear address. Your phone’s location services can drop a pin automatically if you’re not sure of the exact address — that’s a reliable backup.

Time and conditions

• The time the incident happened
• Weather conditions — clear, rain, snow, fog, glare from the sun
• Road conditions — wet, icy, under construction, potholes, debris
• Lighting — daylight, dusk, streetlights, or darkness with no lighting

These details help explain context later. A wet road or low sun isn’t something anyone can dispute after the fact, but only if it was written down at the time rather than reconstructed from memory weeks later.

Direction of travel and what happened

Write a short, factual account: which direction each vehicle was traveling, what each vehicle was doing right before the incident (stopped at a light, changing lanes, turning), and where the point of impact was. Keep it factual and specific rather than interpretive — describe what happened, not whose fault it was. That judgment isn’t yours to make at the scene, and it isn’t necessary for the notes to be useful.

A simple diagram helps more than people expect. Even a rough sketch on paper or in a notes app — boxes for vehicles, arrows for direction of travel, a mark for the point of impact — captures something a written paragraph often loses.

Traffic signals, signs, and lane markings

If a traffic light, stop sign, or lane marking was relevant to how the incident occurred, note it and photograph it if you can. Traffic signal timing and sign placement are exactly the kind of thing that’s obvious while you’re standing there and easy to misremember later.

Surveillance and dash cameras

Look around for anything that might have recorded the moment: a business with a visible security camera, a traffic camera at the intersection, or a dash camera in your vehicle or another driver’s. If you spot a business camera, note the business name and address so it can be followed up on quickly — footage from these systems is often overwritten or deleted after a short window, so speed matters here more than with almost anything else on this list.

A short list to keep in your car

All of this is easier if you’re not trying to remember it while shaken up. Keep a small notepad and pen in your glove compartment, or save a checklist in your phone’s notes app, with these categories:

1. Names, phone numbers, addresses of drivers, passengers, and witnesses
2. Insurance company, policy number, license number for each driver
3. License plate, make, model, color for each vehicle
4. Location, time, weather, and road conditions
5. Photos: vehicles, damage, plates, the scene, VINs, and any signage or signals involved
6. Police officer’s name, badge number, and report number if applicable

Once you have this information gathered, the next step is contacting your insurer to start the claim. Check your policy documents or your insurer’s app for the specific way they want a claim reported — most now accept photos and notes directly, which makes everything you’ve just collected immediately useful rather than something you have to summarize from memory days later.

Right after a crash, your hands are shaking and your instinct is to check the damage up close. Resist that for about sixty seconds. The first photos you take should be wide shots, taken before you touch anything, move anything, or let anyone move their car. Those wide shots are the ones that end up mattering most when an adjuster is trying to reconstruct what happened, because everything after them is evidence about damage. The wide shots are evidence about how it happened.

Wide shots before you touch anything

If it’s safe to stay where you are, stay. Before you pick up a dropped phone case, before you pull your car to the shoulder, before the other driver asks to “just move out of the road,” take a few steps back and photograph the whole scene from several angles. You want to capture:

• Both vehicles in their resting positions, relative to each other
• The lane markings, intersection, or shoulder they’re sitting in
• Any skid marks, debris fields, or fluid trails on the pavement
• Traffic signals or stop signs in the frame, if they’re relevant

Take these from at least two directions — say, standing where one driver was approaching, then again from where the other was approaching. A single photo can be ambiguous about which car was in which lane. Two or three from different angles usually aren’t.

If moving the vehicles is required for safety — you’re blocking a live lane, or you’re at genuine risk from passing traffic — then move them, but only after you’ve gotten these shots. Safety comes first. The point isn’t to freeze the scene forever; it’s to get the resting-position photos in the thirty to sixty seconds before you have to act.

One more thing worth doing at this stage, if your phone shows the time clearly or you can note it separately: photograph a dashboard clock, your phone’s lock screen, or just make a mental note of the time. Adjusters sometimes ask when photos were taken relative to when the collision happened, and your phone’s metadata usually answers that automatically, but it doesn’t hurt to have a visual reference too.

Close-ups of damage from multiple angles

Once the wide shots are done and everyone is somewhere safe, move to close-ups. This is where people tend to under-shoot. One photo of a dented bumper is not enough. You want:

• A close-up straight on to the damage
• A close-up from an angle, so depth and displacement are visible
• A shot with something in the frame for scale — a hand, a key, a business card — especially for damage that’s subtle, like a hairline crack or a misaligned panel gap
• A slightly wider shot that shows where the damage sits on the vehicle, so it’s clear this dent is on the rear passenger door and not floating in space

Photograph every point of contact, not just the one that looks worst. A collision often transfers force further than the obvious crumple zone. A hit to the front corner can tweak a door on the same side, or crack a headlight housing that doesn’t look touched until you look closely. Walk the entire vehicle — yours and, where you can safely and courteously do so, the other one — and photograph anything that looks off, even if you’re not sure it’s related. It’s easier for an adjuster to rule something out than for you to prove something later that you didn’t document at the scene.

Don’t forget the parts that are easy to skip because they’re low or awkward to photograph: the underside of a bumper, wheels and rims, tire sidewalls, and the area around the wheel wells. Damage there is common in collisions and easy to miss in the moment.

If a headlight, taillight, or turn signal is cracked or knocked loose, get a close photo of it both off and, if it’s safe to check, when you test whether it still lights up. That distinction — cosmetic crack versus a light that no longer functions — can matter for how repairs are scoped.

Photos of the whole scene, not just your car

It’s natural to focus your camera on your own vehicle, since that’s the part you’re worried about. But the photos that help an adjuster understand fault and sequence are usually the ones that show context, not just damage. Make a point of capturing:

• The other vehicle, from the same wide and close-up approach described above
• License plates on all vehicles involved, clearly and separately from the damage shots
• Street signs, mile markers, or any fixed landmark that establishes exactly where this happened
• Weather and road conditions — wet pavement, glare, construction cones, a broken traffic signal — anything that was part of the environment at the time
• Any third vehicles involved, even if they seem peripheral, since insurers may need to loop in another driver’s coverage later

If there were witnesses who stopped, a photo of their vehicle and a note of their contact information is worth more than you’d think in the moment. People who saw it happen but weren’t involved often have the clearest, least emotionally loaded account, and their willingness to talk to an adjuster can be significant. You don’t need to interview them. Just get a name and a number, and a photo of their car if it’s nearby, in case it turns out to be relevant.

Also photograph any official presence at the scene — a police cruiser, an officer’s badge number if they give it to you, or a report number if one is issued on the spot. If emergency responders are treating anyone, keep your camera away from that and focus on the vehicles and scene instead; people, not property, are the priority in those moments, and this is not the time to be documenting anyone’s injuries.

What to capture on your own vehicle’s interior

Exterior damage gets most of the attention, but interior photos matter more than most people expect, especially if the impact was hard enough to jostle anything inside the cabin. Once you’re safely stopped and it’s appropriate to do so, photograph:

• The dashboard, including any warning lights that have come on — check engine, airbag, tire pressure, battery
• The airbags, whether they deployed or not — a non-deployed airbag can still matter if it was expected to deploy
• The odometer reading, which timestamps the vehicle’s condition at that moment
• Seats, seatbelts, and the steering column, especially if anything is visibly out of place or a seatbelt shows signs of having locked hard
• Any cracked interior trim, a shattered window with glass on the seats, or anything that shifted position, like a center console lid popped open

If your car has a dashcam, don’t just leave the footage on the device. Once you’re somewhere safe, save or back up the relevant clip if you’re able to. Dashcam footage is one of the most useful pieces of evidence an adjuster can review, because it removes ambiguity about sequence and speed that photos alone can’t fully capture. If you’re not confident in how to export it in the moment, at minimum avoid letting the device overwrite the footage by continuing to drive extensively before you get a chance to save it.

Take these interior photos even if you don’t think you’re hurt and even if the interior looks untouched. It’s a five-minute task at the scene, and it becomes impossible to recreate convincingly once you’ve driven the car home, vacuumed the seats, or had a windshield replaced.

A few habits that make all of this easier

You don’t need a special app or a professional camera. A phone is fine, and in most cases it’s better than a dedicated camera because it timestamps and geotags photos automatically, which adjusters can use to confirm when and where they were taken. A few habits worth building in now, before you ever need them:

• Keep your phone’s location services on for the camera app specifically, so photos carry accurate geodata
• Take more photos than you think you need — storage is cheap, and a photo you don’t end up needing costs nothing, while a gap in documentation can’t be filled in later
• Don’t delete anything at the scene, even blurry or duplicate shots, until the claim is fully resolved
• If you have a passenger who isn’t hurt and isn’t needed for anything else, hand them your phone and let them take photos while you handle other things, like exchanging information

None of this replaces exchanging insurance information, calling for help if it’s needed, or filing a report where one is warranted. It’s simply the difference between a claim that moves smoothly because the record is clear, and one that gets bogged down in back-and-forth because the adjuster is trying to reconstruct a scene from too few, too-late photos. The camera in your pocket is one of the most useful tools you have in those first few minutes. Use it methodically, and the rest of the claim tends to go easier.

You come back to your car and there’s a dent, a scrape, a shattered taillight — and no note, no driver, no explanation. Someone hit your car and left. It’s frustrating, and it can feel like there’s nothing to do about it. That’s not quite true. What you do in the next twenty minutes, and the next few hours, has a real effect on whether this ends with your car fixed or with you covering the cost yourself.

Take a breath first. Then work through this in order.

Check the area for the vehicle or driver

Before you do anything else, look around. Hit-and-run drivers in parking lots often haven’t gone far. They might be circling for another space, sitting in their car deciding what to do, or walking into the same store you were headed toward.

• Scan nearby rows for a vehicle with fresh damage that matches the height and location of the damage on your car — a scraped bumper, a cracked headlight, a smear of paint that doesn’t belong.
• Look for anyone standing near their car looking uneasy, or anyone walking away quickly.
• If you spot a vehicle that looks like a match, do not confront the driver. Note the location, the make and model, the color, and the license plate if you can see it. Confrontation in a parking lot over property damage isn’t worth the risk to your safety.

If you genuinely believe you’ve identified the vehicle or driver, that information goes to the police when you report this, not into a conversation you have yourself in the parking lot.

If there’s no one around and nothing looks out of place, that’s fine too. Most hit-and-run cases in parking lots are solved, if they’re solved at all, through cameras and paperwork, not through spotting the culprit on the spot.

Look for witnesses and cameras

This is the step people skip because they’re rattled and just want to get home. Don’t skip it. Evidence in a parking lot disappears fast — people drive off, and footage gets overwritten on a loop within days at a lot of businesses.

Witnesses

Look for anyone nearby: someone loading groceries a few spaces over, an employee on a smoke break, a person walking to their car. Ask directly: “Did you happen to see what hit my car?” Most people will tell you plainly if they saw something or didn’t.

If someone did see it, get their name and phone number on the spot. Don’t rely on them offering — ask. People mean well but forget, or leave before you think to circle back. A name and number written in your phone, even misspelled, is far better than nothing.

Cameras

Look up. Parking lots attached to stores, malls, apartment complexes, and office buildings often have security cameras covering at least part of the lot. You’re not trying to identify the footage yourself — you’re trying to flag it before it’s gone.

• If you’re at a business, go inside and ask for a manager. Explain what happened and ask whether their parking lot cameras cover the area where your car was parked.
• Ask them to preserve the footage from the relevant time window, even if they can’t hand it over to you directly. Footage often needs to go through police request rather than being given straight to a customer, but a manager who’s aware there’s a request coming is far more likely to save it before it’s automatically deleted.
• If you’re in a residential or apartment lot, note the property management company’s contact information from a sign or your own paperwork, since it may take a call rather than an in-person visit.

Do this before you leave the lot, not from home later. Once you drive off, you often lose the ability to point precisely at “that pole, that angle, this exact time” — and that specificity is what makes footage useful.

Document everything before you leave

Once you’ve checked around and asked around, slow down and document. This is the part that protects you regardless of whether the driver is ever found.

• Photograph the damage from multiple angles. Wide shots showing where the car is parked, medium shots showing the damaged panel, and close-ups of the dent, scrape, or broken part. Include a photo with something for scale, like a coin or your keys, if the damage is small.
• Photograph the surroundings. Get the parking space number or location, nearby landmarks, and anything relevant like debris on the ground (a broken piece of trim or plastic from the other vehicle can sometimes help identify make and model later).
• Photograph any physical evidence left behind. Paint transfer, plastic fragments, tire marks. If a piece of the other car’s bumper or trim is sitting on the ground, photograph it in place before you touch it, then consider whether to leave it for police documentation.
• Note the time. When did you park, and roughly when did you return to find the damage? This narrows the window investigators or camera reviewers need to look at.
• Note the weather and lighting. It sounds minor, but it matters if footage needs interpreting later.
• Write down what you did and who you talked to — the manager’s name, the witness’s name and number, which direction you saw a suspicious vehicle head, if any. Do this while it’s fresh. Memory of small details fades within hours, not days.

None of this needs to be fancy. Your phone’s camera and a note in your phone are enough. The goal is to have a clear, time-stamped record before anything gets cleaned up, moved, or forgotten.

Report it the same day

Two reports need to happen, and both are best done the same day while details are fresh and evidence still exists.

Report to police

File a police report even though it’s “just” a dented door and even though you know the odds of catching the driver are long. There are practical reasons to do this regardless of outcome:

• Many insurance companies expect or require a police report for a hit-and-run claim, particularly if you’re seeking coverage for damage caused by an unidentified driver.
• A report creates an official time-stamped record of the incident, which matters if there’s ever a dispute about when or how the damage happened.
• If cameras or witnesses do turn up something usable, having a report already on file means there’s somewhere for that information to go.

Depending on where you are and how the local department handles property-damage-only incidents, you may be able to file online or by phone rather than needing an officer to come to the lot. Ask what their preferred process is. Get the report number and the responding officer’s name or badge number if one is assigned, since you’ll likely need to reference the report when you file your insurance claim.

Report to your insurance company

Call your insurer the same day, or as soon as reasonably possible afterward. Reporting promptly matters for a few reasons:

• Most policies expect timely reporting, and delay can complicate how a claim is handled.
• The details are freshest right after the incident — exact timing, what you observed, who you spoke to.
• If there’s coverage available for damage caused by an unidentified driver, your insurer can tell you what they need from you and what the next steps look like, including whether they need the police report number, photos, or a copy of any camera footage that gets located later.

Whether this kind of damage is covered, and under what part of your policy, depends on the coverage you carry and the details of your specific policy. Ask your insurer directly rather than guessing, since coverage for hit-and-run and unidentified-driver damage varies by policy and by state, and your agent or claims representative can tell you exactly where you stand and what documentation they’ll want.

Be plain and factual when you report it. Stick to what you observed and what you did: where you parked, what time you left the car, what you found when you returned, who you spoke to, what you photographed. You don’t need to speculate about who did it or why — just lay out the facts you gathered.

A quick checklist for next time

Once this particular situation is handled, it’s worth building a couple of habits that make the next one, if there ever is one, much less stressful:

• Keep a small notebook or a notes app shortcut in your car for jotting down details quickly.
• Know where your insurance company’s claim-reporting number or app is before you need it, not after.
• Get in the habit of glancing at your car when you return to it, rather than assuming everything’s fine — catching fresh damage immediately, versus a day later, makes documenting it far easier.

A hit-and-run in a parking lot is aggravating precisely because it feels unresolved — there’s no other driver to exchange information with, no clear next step handed to you. But the steps above are the next step. Check the area, gather witnesses and camera leads before they vanish, document thoroughly, and report it the same day. That’s what actually moves this from “dented door with no answers” to a claim that has something to work with.
